Risk management is attempting to identify and then manage threats that could severely impact or bring down the organization. Generally, this involves reviewing operations of the organization, identifying potential threats to the organization and the likelihood of their occurrence, and then taking appropriate actions to address the most likely threats.

Traditionally, risk management was thought of as mostly a matter of getting the right insurance. Insurance coverage usually came in rather standard packages, so people tended to not take risk management seriously. However, this impression of risk management has changed dramatically. With the recent increase in rules and regulations, employee-related lawsuits and reliance on key resources, risk management is becoming a management practice that is every bit as important as financial or cilities management.

There are several basic activities which a nonprofit organization can conduct to dramatically reduce its chances of experiencing a catastrophic event that ruins or severely impairs the organization.

Organizations should regularly undertake comprehensive, focused assessment of potential risks to the organization. This focused assessment should occur at least twice a year by a team of staff members representing all the major functions of the organization. The assessment should be carefully planned, documented and methodically carried out.

The most common risks are typically of the types listed below. Comprehensive checklists help a great deal to quickly review a wide range of organizational aspects. Other aspects require more careful review.

Checklists in the following sections cover almost 140 considerations to ensure a well run and highly protected organization.

Efforts undertaken to manage an organization well also contributes to sound risk management. For example, a fully attentive board with a wide range of skills may be the most important guard against major threats to an organization. SeeGovernance (Board) Indicators to assess the quality of your board. Also referenceBasic Evaluation of the Board.Careful strategic planning and effective supervision helps ensure organizational resources are closely aligned to accomplishing the organizations mission, and that staff and volunteers are treated irly and comply with rules and regulations. SeePlanning Indicators andHuman Resources Indicators.

Every organization must have up-to-date policies which guide the relationships between staff and management. There has been a noticeable increase in lawsuits regarding wrongful termination, harassment and discrimination, disagreements about promotions or salary actions, nike outlet store. etc. Parties to lawsuits include the organization, management and/or board members. Therefore, personnel policies must be reviewed at least once a year by an outside advisor who is an expert about all of the employee-related laws and regulations. SeePolicies (Personnel).

Be sure that management is well versed about the policies. Typically, courts will interpret actions by organizational personnel as representative of the organizations preferred course of action and superseding related, documented policies.

For a broad and basic overview of insurance, seeInsurance Against Liability (legal/lia_insr.htm). You might first review this information and then invite an insurance agent (or better yet, an insurance broker) to visit your organization to provide you an overview of the types of insurance typically sold to nonprofits. Note that many insurance professionals might not understand the nature of nonprofits. Therefore, you might first ask a few people from fellow nonprofits for references.

As dreadful as it may sound, you must schedule two hours sometime during the year to close your door and study your insurance policies. Note any questions and pose them to your insurance professional. Ask him or her to provide you a written, clear description regarding any ambiguities and to do so on company letterhead with his or her signature.

Note that Directors and Officers Insurance (D & O, and covered in the above "Insurance Against Liabilities" section) is increasingly considered because of the increasing number of lawsuits. In addition, D & O insurance helps attract highly experienced board members. Be sure your D & O insurance covers "insured vs. insured" which covers employee-related lawsuits and also covers ongoing costs to address a lawsuit (rather than paying only when the outcome of a lawsuit has been decided).

Personnel policies specify how personnel should be hired, supervised and fired in accordance with employment laws that ensure ir, equitable and legally compliant treatment of others. Personnel, particularly those who supervise others, should be trained on the policies.

Background checks can detect if a person has committed crimes, major or minor in nature, which might suggest tendencies for how the person will act in the workplace.

Conduct Board orientations once aRisk Management year for members.

Board orientations make members aware of the unique aspects of the Board and the organization, including the Board&8217;s policies, for example, about ethics, conflict-of-interest, whistleblowers and document retention/destruction.

The policy should specify how Board members, employees and others could safely report that an alleged or actual organizational behavior or practice is illegal,Nike soccer cleats unethical or inappropriate, without retaliation to the whistleblower.

The policy should specify the types of behaviors to conduct and/or to avoid in order to ensure that Board members conduct themselves in a manner that treats others irly, equitably and that is legally compliant.

These procedures ensure that the activities in financial management are conducted in a highly thorough, accurate and useful manner that also minimizes the likelihood of malfeasance, including theft, fraud or misappropriation of funds.

The audit or review verifies the usefulness and accuracy of some or all aspects of financial management and, thus, greatly increases the likelihood that financial numbers and reports are indeed accurate.

This aspect of risk management is often overlooked. Each key role in an organization should have some type of resource to back up performance of that role. For example, another person in the organization should have general understanding of another persons role in case that other person for some reason is not able to perform the role. The use of up-to-date job descriptions, todo lists and receiving regular status reports both help to ensure understanding of how others carry out their roles. Have a staff member back up another member who is on vacation. During staff meetings, have a staff member give a presentation about their role and how they carry it out. Ensure that each critical role has at least one backup person who can step in to conduct the role. The backup assignment should be part of the persons job description to help the person take the assignment seriously.

1. Record all records in a central location and well labeled.

2. Keep critical documents (e.g., board minutes, leases and contracts, Articles of Incorporation, ByLaws, letter from the IRS granting tax-exempt status, etc.) preferably in a fireproof box.

3. Personnel files should be locked in desk drawers with access granted to the Executive Director and his or her assistant.

4. Allocate two hours each year for staff to audit the agencys documentation for relevance, adequate labeling and reasonable organization.

1. Always lock your doors. This seems obvious, but too many organizations il to do so.

2. Ensure your fire protection systems are fully functional by scheduling to test fire alarms twice a year or demanding that your cilitys owner test alarms twice a year. Note that certain electrical equipment can be severely damaged from water sprinklers. Arrange adequate covering or arrangement to minimize water seepage if overhead sprinklers open up.

3. Conduct inspections twice a year, including to:

a) Inspect floors for ripped carpets

b) look for cables or wires laying on the floor (tape over them if you have to)

c) Notice any electrical outlets with black soot hear outlets (this indicates electrical shortages)

d) Ask all staff if their office accommodations are sufficient, e.g., their chairs are entirely comfortable (tilted correctly for their backs and at the right heights), is lighting sufficient for desk and computer work, etc.

e) Notice any heavy items on or near the floor which staff must continually stoop to lift, e.g., boxes of for the copier or printers; open boxes before theyre set on the floor or stack heavy items in a storage room on a shelf

f) Ensure all doors have fully functional door knobs (its amazing how long people can tolerate something as small as a knob that continually jams so the door is difficult to open)

g) Ensure there is a well-stocked first-aid kit available to all staff

h) Post emergency numbers on the wall near the central phone

i) During the winter, ensure adequate ice removal, e.g., spread sand over ice or use salt to melt ice

j) Schedule ten minutes in a staff meeting once a year for the entire staff to reflect on the quality of the cilities

Discounts eat into margins at retailer Primark

PRICE cuts have hit margins at discount shion retailer Primark as it battles against rivals to attract cash strapped shoppers.

Parent company food and retail group Associated British Foods said summer sales on the UK high street came earlier than in previous years and price cuts are bigger than before.

The deep discounting comes on top of higher cotton costs, which have already hit Primarks earnings.

ABFs finance director John Bason said: The summer sales have been brought earlier and deeper. The UK high street is a tough place with a real squeeze on disposable income and people are being careful on what they spend.

Despite the pressure, the company said in a trading update that it still expects little change in the groups earnings for the year ending on September 17.

Mr Bason is more upbeat about the prospects for next year with 10 new stores set to open and, together with store extensions, this should add around 10 per cent to Primarks total floor space for the year to September 2012.

The recent ll in cotton prices from peak levels in March will help cut input costs.

Primark took the decision earlier this year not to pass on the bulk of the hike in cotton costs to consumers in order to stay price competitive.

As a result it suffered a dip in profit margins.

Analyst Graham Jones at house broker Panmure Gordon cut his forecast for Primarks annual margins from 10.7 per cent to 10.2 per cent, which compares to 12.5 per cent the previous year. Mr Bason said that Primarks trading had held up well with overall sales up 13 per cent for the year and like-for-like sales were up three per cent after a similar first-half rise.

He said Primark had a good fourth quarter with third and fourth quarter like-for-like sales both up three per cent.

The 223-store chain will be further boosted by the opening of a new 46,000 sq ft Primark this week at the new Westfield Stratford City shopping centre next to the 2012 London Olympic Park.

Primark has opened stores in Scunthorpe, Ilford, Kings Lynn and Stockport during the past six months.

The company, which also sells Silver Spoon sugar, Kingsmill bread, Mazola vegetable oil, Ovaltine drinks and Twinings tea, reported higher than expected sugar profits thanks to gains in Spain, Africa and China.

This will help offset the Primark margin ll in overall results.

The UK grocery arm and tea and drinks business Twinings Ovaltine both performed well.

However, bakery division Kingsmill only partially recovered higher wheat costs, while foods distributor Westmill was hit by a slowdown in the Chinese and Indian restaurant trade.

James Dawson,Nike mercurial vapor superfly an analyst at broker Charles Stanley, added that a good performance from sugar helped offset some of the weaker results elsewhere, but with pressure continuing on margins there is a risk forecasts could be lowered.

The company has offloaded its Quorn business to tackle its huge debt mountain.

Yesterday ABF confirmed that the Vivergo bio-ethanaol plant in Hull is expected to be completed in spring 2012 after a numberdiscount retail chains of delays.

Analyst Darren Shirley at Shore Capital said: Looking into 2012,nike air max shoes. we continue to expect a very strong year for sugar, with the UK to benefit from substantially higher contract prices.

Grocery sales and profits are expected to be ahead of the prior year, nike outlet store. with growth driven by strong sales growth in Twinings Ovaltine in both developed and emerging markets, more than offsetting a much weaker performance from George Weston Foods in Australia.

In the UK, Allied bakeries is reported to have traded well, with Silver Spoon having a successful year.

Westmill Foods remain constrained by weakness in the Indian and Chinese restaurant mar- kets.

The group, which is 55 per cent owned by chief executive George Weston and his mily, is due to report full-year results on November 8.

Leading light of 350m scheme

PRIMARK will be a key tenant at the landmark 350m Trinity Leeds retail scheme when the centre opens in 2013.

Primark joins two other leading UK retailers, Marks & Spencer and Top Shop, as an anchor tenant, attracting customers to the one million square foot scheme.

Trinity Leeds is the largest retail development outside the capital to get the go-ahead since the credit crunch.

It will feature an Everyman Cinema and two Conran restaurants.

The schemes parent Land Securities, the UKs biggest property company, said it is excellent progress with the development.

Demo: JobOn lets job seekers submit video

Hiring managers know it&8217;s hard to judge how a job candidate will come across in an interview based on their resume and cover letter. But it takes a lot of time to meet everyone who applies for a position in person, even just for a brief chat.

That&8217;s where the Leesburg, Va.-based startupJobOn comes in. It&8217;s a job matching service that combines traditional employment listings with video applications. In their video, applicants can answer the most common interview questions, such as &8220;Tell me about yourself,&8221; or &8220;What would make you a good employee?&8221; Jody Presti, chief executive of JobOn, told VentureBeat. The company is debuting the video application service today at theDEMO Fall 2011 conference in Silicon Valley.

&8220;We reverse the process because the job interview is the most important part,&8221; Presti said.

Presti thinks that the current process is a remnant of another age. There are thousands of job boards out there, all using the same inefficient format. And in high-turnover industries such as st food, managers mostly want to know if the employee has the interpersonal skills to do the job and communicate with coworkers. The video interview can answer that question in a few seconds.

JobOn was founded earlier this year and it has six employees. The company doesn&8217;t have direct rivals other than the big classified ad companies Craigslist, Monster and Careerbuilder. Presti and co-founder Dave Atherton have invested $250,000 in the company. Atherton came up with the idea after experimenting with a video application so he could interview babysitters. Presti has more than a decade of experience in online recruitment.

Applicants create a free account, select a few questions and record their video answers into a webcam. They then use the JobOn search engine to find jobs based on keywords or location. Employers can see the responses and then select who they want to meet. Then the employer pays a fee for the applicant&8217;s contact information.

Employers can make tailored requests related to the particular job. Employers can ask applicants to answer questions from a list of 200. The vast majority of questions pertain to getting to know the person and seeing how they present themselves.

JobOn is currently in beta testing with dozens of retailers and restaurants.

JobOn is one of 80 companies chosen by VentureBeat to launch at the DEMO Fall 2011 event taking place this week in Silicon Valley. After our selection, the companies pay a fee to present. Our coverage of them remains objective.

The unemployment rate in Fresno reached 16 percent this May while more than 5,000 students graduated from Fresno State and began looking for jobs.

To increase the probability of finding a job, a CQ Researcher article recommends students to start early, network, nike outlet store. tailor cover letters and resumes, do summer internships, visit the career center early, engage in social networking and to be persistent when looking for a job.

With the current economic turmoil, it is not uncommon for students to have a hard time finding a job. Students can turn to professors, departments and internships to help them prepare for the job search.

The social work department helped me find an internship which gave me the opportunity to learn more about the career I plan on going into, Fresno State student Erica Sanchez said.

I was told right before I left that I would be a great asset to them once I was done with school. But due to their hiring freeze, I wouldnt be able to really apply for another two to three years, Sanchez added.

She also stated that she has been applying for jobs, but had no luck yet. She believes that the university could offer more to graduating students. I really feel like there should be more for us to be able to find a job once were done with our degree, but I am not too sure what exactly we can do, Sanchez said.

Fresno State Career Services helps students with the transition from school to professional job. Fresno State Career Services program offers students career counseling, web job search, job irs nike air max shoes,Nike soccer cleats and interviews for internship positions.

Many students go through college without ever setting foot in their schools career services office, career service counselor Aleta Wolfe said. Yet, outside of the academic realm, job seekers will pay hundreds, even thousands, of dollars for the very same services that are included free with the cost of tuition.

To increase their job opportunities, students are encouraged to do internships to expand their workplace experience.

A study done by the National Association of Colleges and Employers found 61 percent of students with paid internships received a full-time job offers after graduation, compared to only 38 percent of students who participated in unpaid internships being offered a full-time position.

Another Resumes Cover Lettersoption students have is to pursue a postgraduate education. An article by CQ Researcher published in 2005 showed each year of college raises a persons average salary by 12.9 percent.

Although a degree is not guaranteed immediately after graduation, it does hold a lot of value. Most students will eventually succeed in getting a full-time job. Its just going to be slower and not as smooth a process as it might have been five or ten years ago, Wolfe said.

I dont have a plan regarding work, but I want to continue with my masters degree, Sanchez said.

Basically students today have the misfortune of graduating during the worst economy in 60 years. A lot is beyond their control, but there are ways to adjust to this reality and students can overcome it in ways that they probably didnt consider when they entered college, Wolfe added. There are jobs out there; there are opportunities.

The key to success is to stand out from the crowd when looking for a job. Take the time to network, use the services provided and pursue a higher degree.

Next could bring – jobs with new store at Brotherhood Shopping Park

FASHION giant Next is to open a new store on the outskirts of Peterborough city centre in a move that could create up to – jobs.

The retail chain is the second big name store to be signed up for the Brotherhood Shopping Park, in Lincoln Road, Walton, as part of a 23 million makeover of the retail centre.

The Leicester-based Next has signed a 10-year deal to open a 27,000 sq ft store that will concentrate largely on home furnishings, although the store will also sell mens, womens and childrens clothing ranges.

Just a few weeks ago Marks and Spencer was announced by the park owners, Aberdeen Asset Management nike air max shoes, as the first new tenant for the revamped park which will open in autumn next year.

A spokesman for Next said: The new store will feature all of our product areas, including shion and homeware, and it is not going to result in the closure of our store in Queensgate.

It is estimated the new store could create between 50 and – full and part-time jobs.

The news has sparked some worry that a range of top stores at the shopping park could undermine the success of the city centre.

Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson said: My priority is still to build the vitality of the city centre retail offering.

I hope and believe it is possible to combine the well being of the city centre and the Brotherhood Shopping Park. Next is well known and popular retailer.

Chief executive of Peterborough Chamber of Commerce John Bridge said he was delighted that Next had chosen to invest further in Peterborough, which would create jobs.

Phil Huby, Brotherhood asset manager, said: Next is another significant letting for the shopping park. Alongside Marks & Spencer,Nike mercurial vapor superfly it highlights our vision of attracting top end retailers to Peterborough.

Retail expert Professor Paul Dobson, head of Norwich Business School at the University of East Anglia, said: It is a good signal to Peterborough that Next is investing in the city.

He added: Next is an incredibly well established brand that has moved beyond clothing into homeware and -s young, upwardly mobile customers.

THE Brotherhood Shopping Park, previously home to Focus DIY, Currys and MFI, will have a total area of 260,000 sq ft of retail space, with 110,000 sq ft being on a mezzanine level after the revamp.

It will be completely landscaped and will include polished stone Nike Air force, flushed glazing and cladding.

Incorporated in the new-look development will be 11 retail units, a restaurant, flat evel car park offering 528 parking spaces, cycle rack for 200 bikes and a new covered bus stop.

The planned trading hours once the park is fully open in autumn 2012 will be 9am to 10pm.

BOSSES of a leading retailer have moved to reassure shoppdiscount retail chainsers they do not have plans to close any of their Peterborough stores.

MARKS and Spencer is the first name announced to be opening a new store as part of plans for a &163;25 million revamp of a city shopping park.

With two popular stores Nike soccer cleats, M & S and Next, taking up residence, a large number of shoppers will travel there rather than to the City centre or the Bretton Centre, which both have limited parking. Will the Brotherhood site have sufficient parking for all the shoppers including those using other retailers already on the site?

I understand the new shopping centre will also have a small training school for security officers. High levels of shop-lifting is expected initially from the locals and a number of new devices will be trialled by M&S and Next jointly. As a result Security Staff will be able to get the new UK Security Qualification after working for one month on the shop floor and CCTV studio. The value of this qualification will mean almost guaranteed employment anywhere in the country, and well rewarded court appearances. Finally American – Security systems arrive in the UK. The Stun-guns will be next.

Will this really bring anything New to Peterborough or is it just the same names moving around to take advantage of incentives to move into the retail park? How many shops will close and jobs be lost at those already established premises when everyones finally re-settled into their new locations? Fast Food outlets and Garden Centres excepted.

6 – point taken, but it would be nice to see a bit of both occasionally. Other cities manage it. Theres plenty of big stores in Cambridge, York, even Stamford, but they have dozens of wonderful and quirky little shops too. Our council doesnt seem to want that. Look how they bent over backwards to get TK Maxx onto Bridge Street and remember how hard they make it for smaller independent retailers. To answer your question, no, I wouldnt pay 20% extra every day, but Id at least like the choice.
